• A tea rinse is one of the oldest ways to bring shine to your hair. Boil used tea leaves in enough water, let it cool and then use this liquid as the last rinse.

• Lemon juice mixed with water can also be used as a last rinse to give your hair a shiny and bouncy look.

• A shiny look is also provided if you use vinegar for your final rinse.

• To bring that shine one can use honey to keep your scalp moisturized. You can make honey lotion for your hair by mixing 3 teaspoons of honey for pint of water.

• The use of henna as a natural conditioner proves to be very beneficial for your hair. It helps to bring back the bounce and flair of your hair which has been lacking for quite a while.

• You can add small amount of baking soda in the shampoo which, removes dirt and grease from your hair to give you the shiny look.

• To remove the dirt and other matter from your hair you can use one fourth cup of apple cider vinegar in one gallon of condensed water. This can be stored in the refrigerator and can be used every two weeks for clean, smooth, silky and shiny hair. The proper way to use this solution is to wet your hair with warm water, shampoo it later rinse it. Pour two cups of this mixture and leave it in your hair for sometime. The last stage is to rinse your hair with cold-water.

• To get that extra shine for your hair brew one cup of strong espresso, let it cool. Pour the espresso over your dry hair and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse it to get the extra shine and glow.

• You can also make Egg shampoo at home which requires 1 egg, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon castile soap, 1/2 a cup water or herbal tea and last but not the least 5 drops of essential oils of your choice. Blend all these together to make an Egg shampoo which can bring shine to your hair.

• Many of us who want to clean their hair use shampoos. Try this for a change, massage baking soda into your hair and scalp. This absorbs oil and loosens the dead skin on the scalp. Rinse it thoroughly with water. In the initial stages the hair would be dry but after several weeks you would be dandruff free with smooth and shiny hair.

Longevity gene keeps the brain ticking over

The gene codes for an enzyme called succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH), which destroys GABA, a neurotransmitter that dampens brain activity and causes drowsiness. The gene comes in two common forms: the so-called “T” version is 20 per cent less efficient than the “C” version. In previous studies, young people with two copies of the T version performed slightly worse on IQ tests.

SSADH also detoxifies the brain by getting rid of excess acid, helping to protect cells from the free-radical damage that accelerates ageing.

So to study the effects of the gene on ageing and longevity, Giuseppe Passarino of the University of Calabria, Italy, and his colleagues took a representative sample of 514 Italians aged between 18 and 107 and identified which gene variants they carried. Healthy lifestyle turns off genes that cause cancer

It’s no secret that a healthy lifestyle can slow the progression of cancer, but how this happens has been a mystery. Now new evidence suggests an answer: dieting and exercise may turn crucial genes on and off.

In a pilot study involving 30 men with early-stage prostate cancer, Dean Ornish and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco, US, tested the effects of a dramatic lifestyle change on gene expression in the prostate.

Biopsies taken before and after 3 months of healthy eating, moderate exercise, stress management and psychotherapy showed a significant change in the expression of hundreds of genes.

Many, including several genes involved in tumor formation, were down-regulated, or less active. Others, including some disease-fighting genes, were more active.

A 2005 study (pdf) by Ornish and his team showed how lifestyle changes can reduce certain markers of prostate cancer, possibly slowing its progression. “Now we are starting to understand some of the genetic mechanisms by which these changes may exert such a powerful outcome,” says Ornish.

‘Wider implications’

Because the researchers tested healthy prostate tissue – the patients had such small tumors they were difficult to biopsy – the results may be significant for cancer prevention.

“The implications may be much more widespread, and not just limited to men for that matter,” says Ornish. Two prominent cancer-causing genes called RAN and Shoc2, which were suppressed by the lifestyle changes, are found in most kinds of tumors, including breast and colon cancer.

It is too early to draw conclusions about cause and effect, however, says Meir Stampfer, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School.

Long-term follow-up studies are needed to determine if these genetic changes can truly slow or prevent cancer, he says. “But it’s a very important first step,” he adds. “This will usher in a new wave of research.”

Eros and Psyche, Part II: Adult Love

What does the Eros and Psyche myth tell us about sexuality, love and consciousness? They’re not easy and they must be earned. Of course, this flies in the face of what self-indulgent, feel good movies and therapists who pander to their patients’ self-pity, beliefs and entitlement impart. “I just want to be happy. Why can’t I find someone to love me?” My question in turn is “What have you done to deserve it?”

There are different kinds of love: the familial love between parent and child; between siblings; between friends. That’s different. I’m referring to romantic love between two adults. Chronological age, however, has nothing to do with emotional and psychological maturity.

Early childhood is a time of dependence and symbiosis with your parents. It’s a necessary and safe cocoon needed in the first part of life. Adolescence ushers in a period of rebellion and our first clumsy attempts at autonomy. Attaining adult awareness or consciousness is a difficult journey spanning across a lifetime. Attempts to force or dictate it lead to personal suffering and tragedy.

Psyche attempts to become conscious too soon in her development and suffers the consequences. She tries to force the outcome she believes she needs. The journey toward consciousness requires that we confront inner daemons, childish fears and beliefs and experience them, not run away from them. Some people confuse making the same effort over and over and over with facing their fears and personal growth. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Keep pushing that boulder, Sisyphus.

We childishly try to force an outcome that will never work. We petulantly hold onto the belief that this effort, this relationship must work because the alternative is experienced as devastating and ego annihilation. We must have this thing or person to be happy and feel good about ourselves. We struggle to “win” in a relationship; when we ought to explore what it would mean for us to “lose.”

What painful feelings and images does it conjure? These are the source of primitive fears, doubt, shame, loss, and emptiness. Until these daemons are acknowledged, confronted, accepted and let go, we’ll never be able to truly embrace another because the fear of being in a relationship will continue to play upon these fears.

These are arduous tasks that take a lifetime and replay themselves over and over again. One of the most difficult tasks is integrating sexuality/love (Eros) with a higher consciousness (Psyche). They’re opposite aspects of life: Eros is instinctual, primal and irrational; psyche is deliberate, cerebral and rational.

It requires a “rebirth,” which is symbolized by Psyche’s descent and emergence from the underworld. Some of us have had those experiences in life and in relationships, which forever alter our perspectives, beliefs, and attitudes, and make it impossible to return to and earlier way of being. This is what I mean by “rebirth;” you’re a different person, yet the same. This is growth and it was probably incredibly painful at first.

Some people become stuck here and don’t move forward. They don’t recover from the destruction of long held beliefs and tell themselves, “I tried my hardest and gave my best effort to this particular person. That’s it. Nothing will work.” He acts like a child who folds his arms and holds his breath because he didn’t get his way. This is the vestibule to the doorway of change, growth and adult happiness. We can walk through it or hang out and pout. There’s always a choice, even if we don’t arrive to it willingly.

With each impossible task, Venus demanded, Psyche despaired and contemplated suicide (signifying the depression that often accompanies this process). Strength and assistance came from places you wouldn’t expect; lowly ants, the wind, an eagle. They’re symbols of what we can draw upon when our trials seem too daunting- nature. Slow determination and persistence in the most humbling of circumstances are what guide us. In order to experience joy, you must first know suffering.

This is how we develop as aware, autonomous individuals. Many of us try to find ourselves through another; this never works and generally ends badly. I’ve often wondered if this is one of the contributing factors to the astronomical divorce rates. If either one or both partners are unwilling and/or unable to make that journey alone or together, they will separate. Eros and Psyche did reunite; but not as whom they’d been at the beginning of the tale.

“For the happiness of both partners they must have a full life in the world, and with each other as equals. That, this story conveys, is most difficult to achieve for both, but it cannot be avoided if they wish to find happiness in life, and with each other” (Bettelheim, The Uses of Enchantment, 1976, p. 295). This is easy enough to say, extremely difficult to do, but so very worth it.
